Tyres should be checked periodically or at least once a month or before undertaking a long journey. The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm across the face of the tyre so it vital you monitor this as well as any cracks or bulges that may appear on the side walls of your tyres.
A good set of tyres that are properly inflated will enhance driving performance, improve fuel economy as well as enhancing handling and grip in both wet and dry conditions. Under breaking good tyres with deeper treads will generally stop in a shorter distance if you have to brake suddenly. It is also worth remembering that it is already an offence to drive a vehicle with defective or worn tyres as there is a fixed charge (or fine) of €80, with two penalty points.
If your tyres need replacing the recommendation is to fit them in pairs and for best practice consider using summer tyres from April to October and then swap to cold weather tyres from November to March.
